2024 Jeep Wagoneer vs 2024 Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition may be a capable ride, but the latest Wagoneer simply does so much more. The new 2024 Jeep Wagoneer can tow a grip, offers more safety features than we can count, and has the space to accommodate passengers and cargo without complaint.
Performance
We'll start by saying that the new 2024 Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds. Many SUVs can't even dream of breaking 10k, but Jeep managed to pull it off and then some. The Wagoneer's 3.0L Twin-Turbo engine can make 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque and runs on an 8-speed auto. What's even more impressive is the power of choice between two distinct 4x4 systems. The Quadra-Trac is built for all weather conditions with a Selec-Terrain Traction Management System, and the available Quadra-Trac II upgrade adds automated 4x4 capabilities so you can tread ground without even having to try. For extreme off-road adventures, the available Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System grants you an additional 10 inches of ground clearance with 3.6 inches of suspension travel.
Just like we did with the Jeep, we'll start by telling you the Expedition's towing capacity. It's not great. The new Ford Expedition can only tow up to 9,300 pounds, failing to break the 10k mark in the Wagoneer. The standard engine setup is a 3.5L EcoBoost with only 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Its 10-speed automatic transmission system is nice, but we're more interested in the strength and grit of off-roading capacity and the Expedition greatly falls short in that category.
Safety Features
Can you believe that the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer has over 140 standard and available safety and security features? We won't make you read every single one, but it's true! Here are some of our favorites:
- Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection. While blind spot detection in itself has been a thing for years, this improved version will let you know ahead of time when someone is actively traveling in your blind spot and if anyone happens to be crossing your path when attempting to reverse out of a spot.
- Pedestrian and Cyclist Emergency Braking. Hitting someone who is not in a car is much worse than just hitting another car. That's why we love this feature which tracks pedestrians and cyclists in real time and brakes automatically if needed.
- Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking. We don't always have the luxury of slowing down in response to a potential accident waiting to happen. Some incidents happen too fast for you to react, but this feature actively sends out warnings even at full speed.
We can't say that the Ford Expedition has as many safety features as the Wagoneer because it doesn't. That's a Jeep exclusive. When it comes to the Expedition, you'll just get your usual standard safety feature package with the option to include Active Park Assist 2.0 and Trailer Coverage if you want it. This new SUV may offer hands-free driving technology, but it'll take a bit more time to see if this feature is really as safe as we would like it to be.
Interior
The interior layout is where the Wagoneer's size really shines. With best-in-class second-row legroom (and third-row legroom with second-row seats not full-forward), you can sidestep the usual whining and complaining that you may often hear from the kiddos feeling too cramped in the back. Your adult passengers will also thank you for not making them hunch over the entire ride. The power-folding third row makes it easy to set the stage for up to 116.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. When you go with the Wagoneer, you will also have the luxury of witnessing the latest Next-Gen UConnect 5 NAV system which features the most advanced 2D and 3D images yet!
It's true that the Expedition has a tad more cargo room, but the little bit of extra space you're getting isn't enough to make up for everything else that makes the Wagoneer great. Your passengers may have a difficult time getting in and out of the car, and they may not have as much breathing room. On the tech side, the Expedition just has a regular 12-inch infotainment screen lacking fancy modern operating systems.
Bottom Line
When you want a good and easy time, you can keep everyone happy with the power, space, and accommodations in the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer. The Expedition is great at what it does, but pitting it next to the Wagoneer greatly changes the game.
